Melissa Bowman, MA, LMFT
I am a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist, and graduated with a Master’s degree in counseling in 2005 from the University of Phoenix. I am also a clinical member of the California Association of Marriage and Family Therapists. I have worked in several settings from hospice after-care to child advocacy groups to foster care. I have experience working with people of all ages and provide therapeutic services to children, families, couples, groups and individuals. I provide both in-person and online teletherapy sessions. I am experienced in treating clients dealing with depression, anxiety, bipolar disorder, negative thinking, past abuse, parenting conflicts, ADD/ADHD, behavior modification, marital conflict, grief and loss, and crisis intervention. I use theories such as Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy, Play Therapy, Rational-Emotive Therapy, Narrative Therapy, Christian Therapy, and Person-Centered Therapy to help clients meet their therapeutic goals. I am currently in the process of expanding some of my therapeutic techniques to include Brainspotting and a certification for Integrative Medicine for Mental Health Providers.
I became interested in becoming a therapist when I volunteered as a Court Appointed Special Advocate (CASA) for children who were new to the foster care system and often in crisis. I kept regular contact with the foster child, their natural family and their foster family and helped provide a non-biased opinion to the courts as to the development and well being of the child. It was at this time that I became interested in pursuing a career as a therapist to help children and families overcome issues such as parenting conflicts, abuse and neglect, and other life difficulties. I continue to attend local and online trainings to learn and grow in different areas so that I can best serve my clients. I also use my own life experiences with my children as well as my relationships with friends and family to connect with my clients and their experiences.
I am a compassionate, empathetic, and solutions-oriented professional dedicated to providing exceptional care and implementing effective treatment plans for children, adolescents, and adults in a variety of settings. I have successfully worked with diverse client populations in one-on-one and group settings. I am an effective motivator, communicator and advocate with an inherent ability to manage all types of personalities, diffuse stressful situations, proactively resolve issues, and achieve challenging goals and objectives. I have an innate ability to establish rapport quickly, build trust, interact with and relate to individuals on all levels.
Outside of the office, I enjoy spending time with my family and friends as often as possible. I also enjoy photography, scrapbooking, cooking, baking and spending time at the beach, lake or river.
